3、selfbeforethepowersoftheuniverse.Heperformedritualsthattheybelievedwentback5,000yearstotheYellowEmperor,themythicalfirstfounderofChina.Hemadeareporttotheancestorsaboutthestateoftheempire.Butthatwinterof1899,Chinafaceddisaster.Thefollowingyear1900,Chinawasplungedintocatastrophewithrebellion,floodandf
4、amine,foreignaggression,andthenewcenturysawswiftlythefalloftheEmpire,short-livedrepublic,CommunistrevolutionandthentheinsanemadnessoftheCulturalRevolution.Butdespitethetragediesofthe20thcentury,theChinesepeoplehavecomethrough.TodayChinaiswritingitsownstoryoncemoreunderanewmandate.Solongthegreatestci
