2、arAutomationLtd.,St.Bruno,Quebec,Canada.Abstract:Numerousmechanicalcomponentssuchasbearingsandgearsaremanufacturedfromseamlesssteeltubing,whichofferssuperiormechanicalproperties.Thetubemakingprocessoftentimescauseswallthicknessvariationsinahelicalpatternalongthetubelength.Therefore,

3、additionalclean-upstockisaddedtothetube.Processcontroltoreducethisvariationwouldachieveconsiderablesavingsthroughimprovedmaterialutilizationandreducedtubingscrapandre-work.Forcomponentsmachinedfromtubing,additionalsavingsarerealizedfromreducedmachiningtimeandtoolwear.Alaser-ultrason

4、icsystemwasinstalledimmediatelyafterthefinaloperationinseamlesstubemaking.Thesystemconsistsofgenerationanddetectionlasersandaninterferometerlocatedinacabinoutsidethetubemill,andafibercoupledinspectionheadlocatedabovetheprocessline.Tubewallthicknessandtemperaturemeasurementsareusedto

5、guidemilladjustmentstoachievethedesiredtolerances.Nearly1,000,000tubeswereinspectedinthefirsttwoyearsofoperation.Inaseparateeffort,additionalfunctionalitywasaddedusingthesamesignalsthatmeasurethetubewallthicknesstosensethesizeoftheausteniticgrains.Theausteniticgrainsizeofcarbonandal

6、loysteelisofhighimportanceduetotheimpactonmechanicalpropertiesofthefinalproduct.Thetimedelaybetweenthebackwallreflectionsisafunctionofthewallthickness,whiletheattenuationbetweenthesesamesignalsisrelatedtothegrainsize.Thetargetausteniticgrainsizeisachievedbycontrollingthedeformationa
