2、thSurvey,thisstudyfocusedonpeopleofworkingage(18–64years),whoreportedhavinganasthmadiagnosis.TotalInstituteofHealthEconomics,Edmonton,Alberta,Canadaasthma-relateddisabilitydays,includingin-beddaysandactivity-restricteddays,wereesti-matedbymultiplyingthedifferenceinthemeansoftotaldisabilitydaysbe
3、tweenasthmaticsandnonasthmaticsadjustedforsociodemographiccharacteristicsandotherhealthconditionsbyamultiplelinearregression,withthenumberofasthmaticsinthepopulation.Numberofproductivitylossdayswasasumbetweenthenumberofin-beddays(absenteeism)andthenumberofactivity-restricteddaysmultipliedbyaredu
4、ctioninfunctionallevel(presenteeism),adjustedforfiveworkingdaysperweek.OtherdatafromAlbertaorCanadianpublishedlit-erature,suchasareductioninfunctionallevelof20%–30%,alaborparticipationrateof73%,andanaveragewageof$158perdayin2005,werealsousedforanalyses.Results:Theprevalenceofasthmawasestimatedat8
5、.5%amongapproximately2.1millionForpersonaluseonly.peopleofworkingageinAlbertain2005.Thedifferenceinthemeansoftotaldisabilitydaysbetweenasthmaticsandnonasthmaticswas0.487(95%CI:0.286–0.688)inaperiodoftwoweeksor12.7(7.5–17.9)inoneyear.Withthereductioninfunctionallevelof20%–30%,thenumberofasthma-re
6、latedproductivitylossdayswasestimatedfrom442(259–624)to533(313–753)thousand,respectively.Thecorrespondingcostwasfrom$70($41–$99)to$84($49–$119)million.Ofthese,thepresenteeismaccountedfor42%to52%.Conclusions:Theresultssuggestthatanimprovementinthecontrollingofasthmacouldhaveasignificanteconomicimp
7、actinAlbertaandthatpresenteeismplaysanimportantroleinasthma-relatedproductivitylossesandthereforeemployersshouldnotonlypayattentiontoabsenteeism,butalsotopresenteeismtominimizeproductivityloss.Keywords:productivityloss,absen
