4、tiongeotechnicalcertification1.INTRODUCTIONTheinvestigationandre-useevaluationofmanyIrishboulderclaysoilspresentsdifficultiesforboththegeotechnicalengineerandtheroaddesignengineer.Theseglacialtillorboulderclaysoilsaremainlyoflowplasticityandhaveparticl

5、esizesrangingfromclaytoboulders.Mostofourboulderclaysoilscontainvaryingproportionsofsand,gravel,cobblesandbouldersinaclayorsiltmatrix.Theamountoffinesgovernstheirbehaviourandthesiltcontentmakesitveryweathersusceptible.Moisturecontentscanbehighlyvariabl

6、erangingfromaslowas7%forthehardgreyblackDublinboulderclayupto20-25%forMidland,South-WestandNorth-Westlightgreyboulderclaydeposits.Theabilityofboulderclaysoilstotake-infreewateriswellestablishedandpoorplanningofearthworksoftenamplifiesthis.Thefinesoilco

7、nstituentsaregenerallysensitivetosmallincreasesinmoisturecontentwhichoftenleadtolossinstrengthandrenderthesoilsunsuitableforre-useasengineeringfill.Manyofourboulderclaysoils(especiallythosewithintermediatetypesiltsandfinesandmatrix)havebeenrejectedatth
