3、rsethanreportedin[Galeetal.92](33%insteadof4%).Wealsofoundclassesofam-biguouswordsinwhichasmanyas45%ofthesensesintheclassco-occurwithinadocument.Wediscusstheimplicationsoftheseresultsforthetaskofword-sensetaggingandforthewayinwhichsensesshouldberepresented.1IntroductionWhenawordappearsmorethan
4、onceinadiscourse,howoftendoesitappearwithadifferentmeaning?Thisquestionisimportantforseveralreasons.First,theinteractionbetweenlexicalsemanticsanddiscourseprovidesinformationabouthowwordmeaningsrelatetoalargercontext.Inparticular,theinteractionprovidesabetterunderstandingofthetypesofinferences
5、involved.Second,bylookingatwordsensesthatsystematicallyco-occurwithinadiscoursewegetabetterunderstandingofthedistinctionbetweenhomonymyandpolysemy(unrelatedvs.relatedwordsenses). Wordsensesthatco-occuraremorelikelytoberelatedthanthosethatarenot.Finally,Forexample,raceishomonymousinthesenseof`
