3、&Row,1986).THEBOYKRISHNAJidduKrishnamurtiwasbornonSaturday,May11,1985atMadanapalle,asmallhilltowninsouthIndia,slightlynorth-westofMadras.Hisfather,JidduNarianiah(sometimesspeltNarayaniah),hadmarriedasecondcousin,Sanjeevamma,whoborehimtenchildrenofwhomKrishnawastheeighthandofwhomonlyfivehads
4、urvivedby1907.ThefamilywereTelegu-speakingHindus,belongingtothehighestcaste,theBrahmins,andstrictvegetarians.Thename,whichcouldbespeltGeddu,Giddu,JedduorJiddu(itisnotinvariabletoputthefamilynamebeforethegivenname)wassaidtohavebeentakenfromthevillagefromwhichthefamilyoriginated,thoughnosuchv
5、illagehasbeentraced.Krishna’spaternalgreat-grandfather,aneminentSanskritscholar,andaverypiousman,hadheldahighpositioninthejudicialDepartmentoftheEastIndiaCompany;hisgrandfather,alsoaneruditeman,hadbeenacivilservant,whilehisfather,aftergraduatingfromMadrasUniversity,hadbecomeanofficialintheR
6、evenueDepartmentoftheBritishadministration,risingattheendofhiscareertoapositionoftahsildar(rentcollector)andDistrictMagistrateatasalaryofRs224amonth(about£4aweek),sothefamilywerecomfortablyoffbyIndianstandards.Thefamily,whichadheredrigidlytotheHinducastesystem,livedinasmalltwo-storeyedhouse
7、inMadanapallewithanopendrainrunninginanalleybesideitcarryingallthewaterusedforhouseholdpurposes.Freshwaterfordrinkingwasbroughtdailybythewater-carriersfromanearbywellandemptiedintogreatpotteryjarsstandinginthecentralcourtyardwherethewashinghungandsomeoft
