3、,NewSouthWaleson1stNovember1911,andattendedschoolattheCanterburyBoysHighSchool.Carey’sfatherwasaprinter,whobecameapubliclecturerwhenhearrivedinAustralia.Hismother’speoplewereearlyAustraliansettlers.TheCareyhomewasafarmnearCampbelltownandasaboy,littleSamuelwalkednea
4、rlytwelvekilometerstoSchoolandbackeachday,anactivitythatpreparedhimforworkinharshclimaticandenvironmentalconditions.SamCarey’slargefamilyincludedtwosistersandfourbrothers,oneofwhomdiedinWorldWarII.AttheUniversityofSydney,in1929,Careyenrolledinchemistry,physics,andm
5、athematicsandonlyasafourthsubject,geology.However,hewassoonreorientedtowardsgeologyashismainsubjectbySirEdgeworthDavid,anAntarcticexplorer.Thispreferencedevelopedfromhislikingforfieldworkingeology,combinedwithlabwork.Hewasstronglyinclinedtowardssports(hockey,sailin
6、g,rugby,marksmanship,canoeing)andphysicalactivities(caveexploration,rockclimbing,hiking,jungleexpeditions,parachuting).HegraduatedinGeologyfromtheUniversityofSydneyearningaBachelorofSciencewithFirstClassHonoursin1933,MasterofSciencein1934,andDoctorofSciencein1939.A
7、tuniversityhefoundedtheStudent’sGeologicalSocietyin1931andwasitsfirstpresident.Hehasbeenapioneeringeologyallhislife.HewasfortunatetoparticipateasaprotagonistfortwoandpossiblythreerevolutionsintheEarthsciences.Hechallengedtheconceptofcontinentsinfixedpositionsfromth
