3、ormore.Thisproblemisimpedingnewhighwayconstructioninurbanareas.PorousasphaltpavementhasrecentlybeenintroducedonurbanhighwaysinJapan.Itsnoisereductioneffectof3dB(A)isinsufficient,becauseitonlyimprovesthenoiseenvironmentsatisfactionratebyafewpercent.Furthermore,thedurabili
4、tyofitsnoisereductioneffectusuallyseemstobeonlythreeyears,whichisshorterthanitslife-cycleaspavement.ThePublicWorksResearchInstitute(PWRI)has,since1993,beendevelopinganewlow-noisepavementnamed“PorousElasticRoadSurface”(PERS).Thisnewpavementhasaporousstructurecomposedofgra
5、nulaterubbermadefromoldusedtiresasitsaggregateandurethaneresinasitsbinder.Itsporosityisapproximately40percent.ThepavementwasfirstproposedinSwedeninthe1970s,however,Swedishresearchershavefailedtoimproveitasapracticalpavement.Noisereductionlevelsare15dB(A)forcarsand8dB(A)f
6、ortrucks.TheauthorestimatesthatthepotentialnoisereductionlevelsinLeqexceed10dB(A).Morethan90percentofhighwaysinurbanareaswouldmeetthestandardifthisnoisereductionlevelwereachieved.ThePWRIhasalreadysolvedseveraloftheproblemswithPERS,forexample,insufficientadhesionbetweenth
7、epavementandthebasecourse,lowskidresistance,anditspoorfireproofperformance.Itstechnicallevelhasalreadyreachedthestageoftestconstructiononurbanhighways.ThispaperexaminesthegeneralperformanceofPERSobtainedthroughpastdevelopmentatthePWRI.Italsosummarizestheresultsofrecentre
8、searchdonetofurtherimprovethenoisereductionlevelsofPERSandthefirsttestconstructionusingPERSinJapan.Thef
