2、ndeagerlyreadorlistenedtobyallkindsofpeople.Theintelligentandthesensitiveindividualappreciateitgreatlyandithasappealed,initssimplerforms,totheuneducatedandtochildren.Why?Firstlybecausegivespleasure,Peoplehavereadit,listenedtoit,orreciteditbecausetheylikedit,becauseitgavethemenjoymen
3、t.Butthisisnotthewholeanswer.Poetryinallageshasbeenregardedasimportant,notsimplyasaformofamusement.Ratherithasbeenregardedassomethingcentraltoexistence,somethinghavinguniquevaluetothefullyrealizedlife,somethingwithoutwhichwearespirituallyimpoverished.Tounderstandthereasonforthiswene
4、edtohaveanunderstandingofwhatpoetryis–provisional,becausepeoplehavealwaysbeenmoresuccessfulatappreciatingpoetrythanatdefiningit.Initiallypoetrymightbedefinedasakindoflanguagethatsaysmoreandsaysitmoreintenselythandoesordinarylanguage.Inordertounderstandthisfully,weneedtounderstandwha
5、tisthatpoetry“says.”Forlanguageisemployedondifferentoccasionstosayquitedifferentkindofthings:inotherwords,languagehasdifferentuses.Perhapsthemostcommonuseoflanguageistocommunicateinformation.Wesaythatitisnineo’clock,thatthereisagoodmoviedowntown,ThatGeorgeWashingtonwasthefirstpresid
6、entoftheUnitedStates,Thatthebromineandiodinearethemembersofhalogengroupofchemicalelements.Thiswemightcallthepracticaluseoflanguage;ithelpsustounderstandtheordinarylevelofbusinessliving.Butitisprimarilytocommunicateinformationthatnovelsandshortstoriesandplaysandpoemsarewritten.Thesee
