2、mbercountries.Thereareanumberofaspectstoregulationofthetaxiindustry:regulationofentryintotheindustry,priceregulationandservicequalityregulation.Thediscussionsoftheseaspects(DE)REGULATIONconcludedthatlittleempiricalevidencesupportedtheargumentthatentryrestrictionsimprovedcapacityutilis
3、ation.Onthecontrary,thecasecouldbemadethatincreasedentryandassociatedeconomiesofdensity,aswellasshorterOFTHETAXIpassengerwaitingtimes,warrantedsubsidiesforentry.(DE)REGULATIONOFTHETAXIINDUSTRYTheneedforpriceregulationdependsonthetypeandstructureofthetaximarket.ConsumersfacesearchandIN
4、DUSTRYswitchingcostswhentheyrequiretaxiservices,whichgivestaxioperatorsconsiderableprice-settingpower.Theabuseofthatmarketpowerisgreaterinunfamiliargeographicenvironmentsandinthecruisingmarket.Inmarketsdominatedbydispatchcentres,firmsmayearnareputationforhighorlowserviceprices,whichop
5、ensupthepossibilityofsomepricecompetition.Asimilarargumentappliestoservicequality.Themoreanonymousthemarket,thegreatertheneedforregulation.Again,dispatchcentresenhancetheself-regulatoryroleofcompetitionforrepeatcustomerrelationsbybuildingagoodreputation.Experienceswithderegulatingthet
