3、ngtheearthanditsinhabitantsforgenerationstocome.Asinglenuclearbombcanbeathousandtimesthanmoredevastatingthanthelargestconventionalexplosives.Asinglenuclearweaponcanruintonsofsoilandvegetation.Asinglenuclearweaponcandestroyanentirecityofover120,000defenselessciviliansandleaveabouttwiceth
4、enumberofpeopletodieinslowagony.Nuclearweapons,withtheirindiscriminate,massivedestructivepower,cannowdestroytheworldseveraltimesover.Terrifiedbythecatastrophicpowerofnuclearweapons,Idarenotthinkwhattheworldwouldbelikeifthisdarkandmonstrousshouldfallintowronghands.IfAdolfHitler’styrannic
5、alregimehadacquiredthefirstfunctioningnuclearweapon,historywouldhavetoberewritten.Andevenworse,whatiftheterroristsgonuclear?WhatiftheperpetratorsoftheSept.11thhorrors,whoseintenttoinflictdestructionisunconstrainedbyhumanfeelings;andwhosecapacitytoinflictisenlargedbytechnology,couldstrik
6、eagainandthistimewithdirtybombs?Ifwehesitateinthefacethethreat,whenweshouldhaveactedasearlyaspossible,thenwearecondemnedtoliveundereverlastinglamentandhorror.Hence,thetimehascomeforustodosomething.Togetherinpartnership,weshouldstemthetideofnuclearproliferationforhumansecurityandsurvival
