2、ity.Ibelievewehavegathered,thesefewdaysinBeijing,thelargestdelegationoffacultyfromHarvardUniversitythathasevercometoChina.Thatis,Ibelieve,areflectionoftheimportanceofChinatotheworldoftheTwenty-FirstCentury.Itisareflectionofourcommonendeavor:thepursuitofknowledge,andtheteaching
3、ofstudents.IamveryexcitedtobehereatoneofChina'sgreatuniversities,[at]oneoftheworld'sgreatuniversities,andIamespeciallygladtohavethechancetotalktosomanyofyourstudentsabouttheworldthattheyaregoingtoinherit.Youknow,ifyouthinkaboutwhatwedoinuniversities,ifyouthinkaboutthephenomeno
4、nofglobalization,Ibelievethatourspecialroletodayandthephenomenonofglobalizationaremanifestationsofayetdeepertransformationthatisgoingonthroughouttheworld.Andthatisthis:knowledgeisbecomingmorecentraltoeveryaspectofhumanactivitythaniteverhasbefore.Thinkaboutsomeexamples.Iamconvi
5、ncedthatwhenthehistoryofthisperiodiswritten,twocenturiesfromnow,thefalloftheBerlinWallandtheendoftheColdWarwillbethesecondstorythatiswritteninthosehistorybooks.ThefirststorythatwillbewrittenaboutthelastfifthoftheTwentiethCenturywillbetheriseofsocietieswhereoverabillionpeople-c
6、losertotwobillionpeople-live,tomodernity;willbethedoublingofstandardsoflivingthattakeplacewithinadecade,andthentakeplacewithinadecadeagain,for,literally,billionsofpeople.Thatisaneventthat,inthehistoryofthesecondmillennium,Ibelieve,haspotentialtorankwiththeRenaissanceandwiththe
7、IndustrialRevolution.Andwhatisatitcenter?Chinaisatitscenter,withthedramatictransformationthatChinahasseenoverthelasttwocenturies.Andknowledge,thespreadanddisseminationofknowledge,isatitscenteraswell,becausenocountryinEurope,nocountryinNorthAmerica,hasevergrownnearlyasrapidlyin
