3、ractAbstractBasedonAGlossaryofNetspeakandTextspeakwrittenbyCrystal,thisthesismainlyfocusesonmetaphor’scognitivefunctionofmeaningconstructionfeaturedbyNetspeakmetaphor.TheresultsoftheearlyresearchesonlexicalfeaturesofNetspeakdemonstratethecreationofNets

4、peakisdrivenbynetizens'preferencetoefficiencythanprecisionincommunication.Thenewdevelopmentaltrendofnetspeakthatusingmetaphortoconstructnewmeaningsisconsistentwiththeearlyresearches.AccordingtoRelevanceTheory(hereafterRT),peopleliketalkinglooselywithme

5、taphoricutterancebecauseitisthebestwaytoachieverelevanceinconversion.That’stosaypeopleusemetaphortoenrichthemeaningofnetspeakbecauseit’sthemostefficientwaytoconstructnewmeaning.AnotherapproachtomeaningconstructedbymetaphorisConceptualBlendingTheory(her

6、eafterCBT),whichillustratestheprocessofmeaningconstructiongraphically.Accordingtoconceptualblendingtheory,peoplesetupmentalspacesduringtheirthinkingandtalkingandtheywillprojectelementsindifferentmentalspacestoformablendinwhichmeaningconstructionoccurs.

7、Metaphoricmeaningaregeneratedbycross-spacemappingbetweensourcedomainandtargetdomain.Intheprocessofcross-domainmapping,elementsandstructuresfrominputspacesareselectivelymappedontothegenericspacetoruntheblendwherecorrelatedelementsandstructuresareblended
