2、dmagneticbias,ACmagneticfieldamplitudeandfrequencyonthecharacteristicsofhysteresisloopsproducedinamagnetostrictivetransducer.ThestudyusesamagnetostrictivetransducerdesignedatIowaStateUniversitythatutilizesan11.5cm(4.54in)longby1.27cm(0.5in.)diametercylindricalTerfen
3、ol-Drod.Thistransducerallowscontrolledvariationofthefollowingoperatingconditions:mechanicalprestress,magnitudeandfrequencyofACmagneticfield,andmagneticbias.Byperformingextensiveexperimentaltests,materialpropertytrendscanbedevelopedforuseintheoptimizationoftransducer
4、designparametersfordifferentapplications.Fortheresultspresented,themagneticbias,theACmagneticfieldamplitude,andthefrequencyofexcitationwereindependentlyvariedwhiletemperature,massloadandprestresswerekeptconstant.Theminorhysteresisloopsofthestrainversusappliedmagneti
5、cfield,fluxdensityversusappliedmagneticfield,andmagnetizationversusappliedmagneticfieldarepresentedandcompared.Materialpropertytrendsidentifiedfromtheminorloopsarepresentedfortheaxialstraincoefficient,permeability,susceptibility,andenergylosses.Keywords:Terfenol-D,m

7、0^-6m/mwhenexposedtoamagneticfieldundercertainconditions.Thismaterialistheactiveelementinmanymagnetostrictivetransducersthatarebeingdeveloped,tested,andmanufacturedatthepresent.Oneoftheobstaclesthatwasfoundinthedesignofthesemagnetostrictivetransducersisthatthebehavi
