2、icsandcontrolofbeams,powersupplyandmotors.ThispaperaimsatfamiliarisingthereaderwithDSPfundamentals,namelyDSPcharacteristicsandprocessingdevelopment.SeveralDSPexamplesaregiven,inparticularonTexasInstrumentsDSPs,astheyareusedintheDSPlaboratorycompanionofthelecturesthispaperisbasedupon.Thetypicalsys
3、temdesignflowisdescribed;commondifficulties,problemsandchoicesfacedbyDSPdevelopersareoutlined;andhintsaregivenonthebestsolution.1Introduction1.1OverviewDigitalSignalProcessors(DSPs)aremicroprocessorswiththefollowingcharacteristics:a)Real-timedigitalsignalprocessingcapabilities.DSPstypicallyhaveto
4、processdatainrealtime,i.e.,thecorrectnessoftheoperationdependsheavilyonthetimewhenthedataprocessingiscompleted.b)Highthroughput.DSPscansustainprocessingofhigh-speedstreamingdata,suchasaudioandmultimediadataprocessing.c)Deterministicoperation.TheexecutiontimeofDSPprogramscanbeforeseenaccurately,th
5、usguaranteeingarepeatable,desiredperformance.d)Re-programmabilitybysoftware.Differentsystembehaviourmightbeobtainedbyre-codingthealgorithmexecutedbytheDSPinsteadofbyhardwaremodifications.DSPsappearedonthemarketintheearly1980s.Overthelast15yearstheyhavebeenthekeyenablingtechnologyformanyelectronic
6、sproductsinfieldssuchascommunicationsystems,multimedia,automotive,instrumentationandmilitary.Table1givesanoverviewofsomeofthesefieldsandofthecorrespondingtypicalDSPapplications.Figure1showsareal-lifeDSPapplication,namelytheuseofaTexasInstruments(TI)DSPinaMP3voicerecorder–player.TheDSPimplementsth
