1、ThispageintentionallyleftblankTheTheftofHistoryJackGoodyisoneofthepre-eminentsocialscientistsintheworld.Overthepasthalfcenturyhispioneeringwritingsattheintersectionsofanthropology,history,andsocialandculturalstudieshavemadehimoneofthemostwidelyread,mostwidelycited,andmostwidelytranslatedscholars
2、workingtoday.InTheTheftofHistoryGoodybuildsonhisownpreviouswork(notablyTheEastintheWest)toextendfurtherhishighlyinfluentialcritiqueofwhatheseesasthepervasiveEurocentric,orOccidental-ist,biasesofsomuchwesternhistoricalwriting,andtheconsequent‘theft’bythewestoftheachievementsofotherculturesintheinv
3、en-tionof(notably)democracy,capitalism,individualism,andlove.Thisargumentwillgeneratepassionatedebate,ashispreviousworkshavedone,andmanywilldissentfromGoody’sperceptiveconclusions.Few,however,willbeabletoignoretheforceofhisthought,orthebreadthofknowledgebroughttothediscussion.TheTheftofHistorydi
4、scussesanumberoftheoristsindetail,includ-ingMarx,Weber,andNorbertElias,andengageswithcriticaladmira-tionwesternhistorianslikeFernandBraudel,MosesFinley,andPerryAnderson.Manyquestionsofmethodareraisedinthesediscussions,andGoodyproposesanewcomparativemethodologyforcross-culturalanalysis,onethatgiv
5、esamuchmoresophisticatedbasisforassessingdivergenthistoricaloutcomes,andreplacesoutmodedsimplediffer-encesbetween,forexample,the‘backwardEast’andthe‘inventiveWest’.Historians,anthropologists,socialtheorists,andculturalcriticswillallfindsomethingofrealvalueinTheTheftofHistory.Itwillbeacat-alystfor
