4、ationofsummaries.WeevaluateourapproachusingmanuallyproducedsummariesandautomaticsummariesproducedbythreeautomatictextsummarizersfortheBrazilianPortugueselanguage.Theresultsareinagreementwithhumanintuitionandshowedtobestatisticallysignificant.1IntroductionA
5、utomatictextsummarizationisthetaskofautomaticallyproducingashorterversionofatext(Mani,2001),whichshouldconveytheessentialmeaningofthesourcetextandattendthereader’sgoals.Nowadays,duetotheincreasingamountofavailableinformation,mainlyon-line,andthenecessityof
6、retrievingsuchinformationwithhighaccuracyandofunderstandingitfasterthanever,automaticsummarizationisunquestionablyanimportanttask.Summariesarepresentinawiderangeofourdailyactivities.Duringscientificpaperswriting,wehavetowriteabstracts;whenreadingthesepaper
7、s,abstractshelpustodeterminewhetherthepaperisimportantornotforourpurposes.Inabookshop,thedecisionofbuyingabookisusuallybasedonitscoversynthesis.Someinternetsearchenginesusesummariestoidentifydocumentsmainpartsandtohelpusersinchoosingwhichdocumentstoretriev
