2、roduct/lifequality,minimizedwastematerials,re-ducedpollution,increasedsafetyandreducedenergyconsumptionetc.Onecanobservethatthenotionoffeedbackandcontrolplaysanimportantroleinmostsocio-technologicalaspects.Aslogan,“ControlWillBethePhysicsofthe21stCentury”,appearedinaplenaryses
3、sionofthe40thIEEEInterna-tionalConferenceonDecisionandControl(Dec.2001,Orlando,FL.,USA),suggeststhatatleastallengineeringstudentsshouldtakeafirstcourseonsystemscontrol.Itisalsowidelyacceptedthatthe“control”subjectismore“engineering”than“science”althoughthetrendinthe“control”sub
4、jectseemstoevolvealongthereversalwayofmore“science”than“engineering”.Thisdilemmacausedthe“Theory/PracticeGap”whichhasrecentlybeendiscussedintheSpecialSectiononTheory/PracticeGap,IEEEControlSystems(vol.19,no.6,1999).Usingacomputertoapplythecontroltheoryincontrolpracticeisnowuna
5、voidable.MATLAB/SimulinkTMisconsideredasthedominantsoftwareplatformforcontrolsystemanalysisanddesignwithnumerousoff-the-shelftoolboxesdedicatedforcontrolsystemsrelatedtopics.FromwhatConfuciussaidthat“Thecraftsmanwhowishestoworkwellhasfirsttosharpenhisim-plements”1),itisclearthat
6、MATLABistheright,alreadysharpened“imple-ment”.However,thegapbetweenabeginnerandtheexistingrichresourcesor“implements”availableforcontrolsystemsisalsoobvious.Therefore,be-tweenthe“Theory/PracticeGap”,forbeginners,thereexistsanotherparty-CACSD(computer-aidedcontrolsystemsdesign)
7、orMATLAB.Thatis,thegap“Theory-MATLAB-Practice”shouldbeminimizedinthefirstcon-trolcourseforallengineeringstudents.Forexample,onemaynotevenknowhowtoenterthesystemmodelintotheformunderstandablebyMATLAB.Thistextbookaimsatminimizingthe“Theory-MATLAB”gapviareducedmathematicsandincrea
