3、Materials–Student2Ó2001MaterialsScienceandEngineering-UNSWINTRODUCTIONThematerialsusedforaircraftconstructioncanbesplitintotwobroadcategories;airframematerialsandenginematerials,andthesewillbeconsideredseparately.However,selectionofmaterialsforbothapplicationsisbasedonthedesignconstraints.Theseared

4、efinedbythemechanical,chemicalandthermalpropertyrequirementsofeachcomponent.Typicaldesignconstraintsincludeweight,stiffness,strength,fatigueperformance(high/lowcycle),corrosionresistanceandcost.THEAIRFRAMETheairframeconsistsofcomponentssuchasthe:wingupper,winglower,fuselage,spars,frames,ribs,landin

5、ggearandcontrolsurfaces.Essentially,theairframeisrequiredtoresistappliedloads,provideanaerodynamicshapeandprotectpassengers,payloadandequipmentfromtheexternalenvironmentalconditions.Eachcomponenthasdifferentspecificconstraints,resultingindifferentmaterialselectionforeachcomponent.WingsOverall,thewi

6、ngsaresubjectedtothemostcomplexandhighestlevelsofstress.However,duetothenatureofthewingloadingtheupperandlowerwingsareloadeddifferently(compressionandtensionrespectively)andthuswillbetreatedseparately.WingupperThewingupperisloadedinbendingandisundercompressionstresses.Thus,toresisttheappliedstresse
