4、data-driventheoreticalstudies.However,thesehaveyettobefullyutilized,eitherbyresearchscientistsoreducators.Whilethesituationisimproving,alargeamountofdata,results,andrelatedtheoreticalmodelsstillexisteitherinaninert,noninteractiveform(e.g.,journalpublications)orasunlinkedandc
5、urrentlyincompat-iblecomputerdataoralgorithms.Presentedhereistheprototypeofacomputationalenvironmentandtoolset,calledtheVirtualResearchVessel,toimprovethesituationbyprovidingmarinescientistsandeducatorswithsimultaneousaccesstodata,maps,andnumericalmodels.Whileinfrastructurei
6、sdesiredandneededforreadyaccesstodataandtheresultingmapsviawebGISinordertolinkdisparatedatasets(datatodata),itisarguedthatdatamustalsobelinkedtomodelsforbetterexplorationofnewre-lationsbetweenobservables,refinementofnumericalsimulations,andthequantitativeevaluationofscientific
