2、mandintroducedthemselvesanddescribedtheirinterestinorpastexperiencewiththeNWCC.(SeeattachmentAforparticipantslist.)ThePotentialandChallengesofWindEnergyContributingtoWaterResourceManagementintheWestInadditiontotheusualNWCCbusiness(includingreviewinganddiscussingrecentworkgr
3、oupactivitiesandworkplansfornear-terndirections)theBusinessMeetingalsoprovidedanopportunitytohaveaninformationalbriefingonatopicofinteresttotheNWCCmembers.ForBusinessMeeting34,thistopicwastheissueofwaterresourcesmanagementintheSouthwest,andadiscussionoftherelationship,impac
4、tsandopportunitiesforwindenergy.RonLehroftheAmericanWindEnergyAssociationprovidedmoderationforthissession,whichfeaturedfivespeakersanddiscussion.ThefirstpresenterwasLarryFlowers,oftheWindPoweringAmericaprogram,whoprovidedasituationanalysisofwindenergyandwaterresourcesintheW
5、est.TheWindPoweringAmericaprogramhastraditionallyfocusedontheeconomicdevelopmentandeconomicsarguments,butisnowalsoinvestigatinghowwaterisusedtocoolpowerplantsandprovideservicestoresidential,commercial,industrial,andagriculturaluses.Thereisalimitedsupplyofwater,particularlyi
6、ntheWest,andoverthelongtermtheproblembecomesmorepronouncedduetopopulationgrowth,increaseddemand,andlimitedsupplyfromdroughtandclimatechange.WindPoweringAmericahasbeeninvestigatingtheseissuesandheldbriefingsforDepartmentofEnergyandNationalrenewableEnergyLabpersonnelinNovembe
7、r2004.Notingthatagriculturalusesdominatewateruseinthewest,withover70%beingusedforthispurpose,Larrydemonstratedsupplypressuresfrompopulationgrowth,urbangrowth,andclimatechange.Totalwaterwithdrawalsdifferfromconsumption,inthatitisreturnedtothesource.Howeverthisstillhasaneffec
