2、ics,UniversityofOtago,P.O.Box56,Dunedin,NewZealandMay7,1998AbstractWepresentatechniqueforlockingthefrequencyofavoltagecontrolledoscillatortothefreespectralrangeofaFabry-Perotcavity.Thetechniqueusesphasemodulationofthelaserbeamincidentonthecavitytoprovidetheerrorsignal.Theoreti
3、calanalysisandexperimentalresultsfortheamplitudeandphaseresponseofthelightre°ectedfromthecavityandtheerrorsignalsarepresented.Thelockingwasachievedwithaloopgainof23dB.Thistechniqueisalsodemonstratedtobeinsensitivetothefrequencynoiseofthelaser.Fabry-Perotinterferometershavebeen
4、usedtomakeaccuratedisplacementmeasurements1,provideopticalstandards2,facilitateopticalcommunications3,andtofre-quencystabilizelasers4.RecentlyamodulationtechniquehasbeendevelopedbySkeldonetal.5andManson6thathasthepotentialtoexpandtheusefulnessofFabry-Perotinterferom-eters.Mans
5、on'sexperiment6demonstratedthataradiofrequency(RF)signalwithawellde¯nedminimumatthefrequencyofthecavityfreespectralrange(FSR)couldbeproduced1fromthelighttransmittedthroughacavity.Skeldonetal.5usedthesametechniquetomon-itorthelongtermthermaldriftoftheFSRofasuspendedmodecleaning
6、interferometer.Skeldonetal.derivedanerrorsignalwhichtheyproposedcouldbeusedtolocktheFSRofamodecleaningcavitytoanRFsource.Thispaperexperimentallydemonstratestheuseofasimilarerrorsignaltolocktheoutputfrequencyofavoltagecontrolledoscillator(VCO)totheFSRofanopticalcavity.Moreover,
7、weshowthatthiserrorsignalisinsensitivetolaserfrequencynoise.InitiallytheFSRlockingtechniqueisdescribedbyconsideringthelighttransmittedthroughaFabry-Perotcavity.Itislaterextendedtothelightre°ectedfromacavity,thecon¯gurationusedintheexperimentsdiscussedbelow.Theresonanceofacavit
