3、secondnovel,Cranford(1853),beganasaseriesofpapersinthisjournal.HerothernovelsareRuth(1853),NorthandSouth(1855),Sylvia’sLovers(1863),CousinPhillis(1864),andWivesandDaughters,publishedposthumouslyin1866.Shealsowrotemanystoriesandnon-fictionalpieces,andthefirstbiographyofCharlotteBrontë(1857
4、).ShediedinHampshirein1865.ShirleyFosterhasrecentlyretiredfromtheUniversityofSheffieldwhereshewasReaderinEnglishandAmericanLitera-ture.ShehasalsotaughtattheUniversityofHull.Herresearchinterestsarenineteenth-centuryEnglishandAmericanfictionandtravelwriting,andshehaspublishedwidelyintheseare
