1、NonverbalCommunicationandBodyLanguage1IntroductionVerbalcommunicationisdefinedasspokencommunication,includingtheuseofwordsandintonationtoconveymeaning.Ontheotherhand,non-verbalcommunicationis“silent”communication,includingtheuseofgestures,postures,position,eyecontact,facialexpressions,andc
2、onversationaldistance.Aninvestigationintothefunctionsofverbalandnon-verbalcommunicationshows:thetotalimpact=7%verbalfeeling+38%vocalfeeling+55%facialexpressions.Thisresultreflectstheimportantroleofnonverbalcommunicationindailycommunication.AsDavidAbercrombiesaid:“Wecanspeakinvocalorgans,bu
3、twecanusenonverbalgesturetocommunicate.”Asonemeansofnonverbalcommunication,bodylanguageisthemostnaturalpartofnon-verbalcommunicationanditplaysanimportantroleinnon-verbalcommunication.Justlikeverballanguage,bodylanguageisalsothecarrierandcontainerofculture.Thesamebodylanguageintwoculturesha
4、sdifferentmeaning,sostudyingthecultureanddifferencesofbodylanguageincross-culturecommunicationisveryimportant.1.1NonverbalCommunicationandBodyLanguage“Nonverbalcommunicationisaprocessinwhichcommunicatorsusethenaturalfeaturesoftheirbodiestodeliverinformationandexpressspecificmeaninginstinct
5、ivelytotheothercommunicator.”(Guanyanxiang,2004,p90)Thestudyofnonverbalcommunicationcoversthreemajorparts:proxemics,kinesicsorbodylanguage,andparalanguage.Kinesicsisalsocalledbodylanguage,whichstudiesthemeaningsofthemovementofallpartsofbodyanditincludesmanynonverbalbehaviorsuchaseyelanguag
6、e,gestures,postures,facialexpressions,touchandsoon.InWebster’sNewDictionary,kinesicsisdefinedas“tosystematicallystudynonverbalbodyaction(suchasblush,eyemovements,etc)andcommunication.”Samovaroncesaysthat“Kinesicsisthesystematicstudyofbodylanguagemovementsandaction,”andthroughthestudy,kines
