3、ationshipbetweenthedistributionandabundanceofchironomidsandwaterdepthhaslongbeenrecognized.However,fewstudieshavebeencarriedoutonthistopicinarid15regionswherethechironomidcommunityisusuallycontrolledbywatersalinity.ThusBostenLake,the2largestinlandfreshwaterlakeapprox.1200kminChinaandl
4、ocatedinthenorthwestofthecountry,providesauniqueopportunitytoinvestigatethisrelationshipinanaridregion.Atotalof42surfacesedimentsamples,fromwaterdepthsof0mto17m,and12chironomidtaxawereusedintheanalysisThefirstPCAaxisexplained59.3%ofthevarianceinthechironomidassemblageandtherewasa220si
5、gnificantcorrelationbetweenPCAaxis1scoresandwaterdepthr0.84,P0.001.Thechironomidassemblagessignificantlychangedat8.0m.Thisthresholdcorrespondedtoanabruptchangeintheunderwaterslopesandthespatialpatternofaquaticvascularplants.RDAshowedthattheabundanceofChironomusplumosus-type,Microchiro
6、nomusandCryptochironomuswaspositivelycorrelatedwithwaterdepth,whereastheabundanceofTanytarsus,Polypedilumnubifer-type,25CricotopusandPsectrocladiussordidellus-typewasnegativelycorrelatedwithwaterdepth.Theseecologicalrelationshipshavebeensupportedbytheliterature.Thequalitativechironomi
7、d-inferredchangesinlakelevelandqualitativediatom-inferredchangesinsalinityfromasedimentcoreBSTC001werealsocompared.Thecloseagreementintrendsofthesetwovariablesvalidatestheuseofchironomidassemblagestostudypalaeo-hydrologicalvariabilityinthiswesterly-dominatedarid30region.Keywords:Physi
