2、resinglemodefiberhasbeenproposedanddemonstrated.Bywayofsplicingandtaperingatthefusionpointofone-coresinglemodefiberandthetwo-coresinglemodefiber,aneffectivecouplingtechniqueisimplemented.Thecouplingprocessingissimulatedbythebeampropagationmethod.Theeffectsofthetwocoresofthetwo-corefibernon-

4、rs,switches,andmultiplexers;060.2340Fiberopticscomponents1.IntroductionSeveraltypesofmicro-structuredopticalsilicafibershavebeendevelopedinfiberoptics,forinstance,photoniccrystalfiberorhollyfiber[1-3].Inthiswork,however,thetraditionalindex-guidedmulti-corefibersareconcerned.Itisproposedinth
5、efieldsofopticalcommunication[4],components[5-10],andopticalsensorsduetotheircompactandpotentialapplicationssuchaspowerfulcompactfiberlaser[11,12],bendingsensing[13-15],andnonlineardevices[16-18].Multi-coreopticalfiberwithnominallysingle-modecoresprovidesahostfortheinvestigationofmanypotent
6、ialapplications.Amajordisadvantageassociatedwiththeiruse,however,isthedifficultyinbothlightexcitinganddetectingthesignalsinthemulti-coresbecauseoftheirsmallsizeandrelativelycloseproximity.Becauseeachcorehastypicallyaradiusofonlyafewmicrometersandtheirseparationisoftheorderofseveraltimesthec
7、oreradiusinthecladdingwithinthediameterof125m.Itisimpossibletobuttcoupleor splicestandardfibersdirectlytothem.Inordertoovercomethisproblem,LuiandChuhaveproposedacouplingtechnique[19],whichemploysbulkopticalelementsandlensestofocustheinputontothemulti-cor
