3、ndependence.WhatIseektoconveyisthehistorictruththattheUnitedStatesasanationhasatalltimesmaintainedoppositiontoanyattempttolockusbehindanancientChinesewallwhiletheprocessionofcivilizationwentpast.Today,thinkingofourchildrenandtheirchildren,weopposeenforcedisolationforourselvesorforanypartoftheAmer
4、icas.EvenwhentheWorldWarbrokeourin1914,itseemedtocontainonlysmallthreatofdangertoourownAmericanfuture.But,astimewenton,theAmericanpeoplebegantovisualizewhatthedownfallofdemocraticnationsmightmeantoourowndemocracy.Weneednotover-emphasizeimperfectionsinthePeaceofVersailles.Weneednotharponfailureoft
5、hedemocraciestodealwithproblemsofworlddeconstruction.WeshouldrememberthatthePeaceof1919wasfarlessunjustthanthekindof"pacification"whichbeganevenbeforeMunich,andwhichisbeingcarriedonundertheneworderoftyrannythatseekstospreadovereverycontinenttoday.TheAmericanpeoplehaveunalterablysettheirfacesagain
6、stthattyranny.Everyrealistknowsthatthedemocraticwayoflifeisatthismomentbeingdirectlyassailedineverypartoftheworld-assailedeitherbyarms,orbysecretspreadingofpoisonouspropagandabythosewhoseektodestroyunityandpromotediscordinnationsstillatpeace.Duringsixteenmonthsthisassaulthasblottedoutthewholepatt
