2、tomeasurethespectrumandspatialpowerdistributionoftheoutputofaquasi-cwcarbonmonoxidegaslaser.Thedetectorrecordingmediumiscomposedofthinmylaroatedwithtemperaturesensitive,encapsulated,cholesteric,liquidcrystalsandenergyabsorbingblackpaint.Auniformspatialcolor

3、distributionoftheliquidcrystalsisestablishedandmaintainedbyimmersioninacontrolledtemperatureliquidbath.Theresultinguniformcolordistributionismodified,atvariousspatialpoints,bytheadditionoflaserenergyobtainedeitherindirectlyfromthelaseroutputcouplertoyieldth

4、espatialdependenceofthenearorfarfieldlaseroutputorfromaspectrometeroutputtoyieldthespectrumofthelaseroutput.Theadditionoflessthan15mJ/cm2ofincidentenergyisadequatetomodifythecolordistribution.Theuniformityandprecisecontroloftheliquidcrystaltemperatureandhen

5、cecolor,bytheuseofaliquidbath,makesitpossibletocomparecolors,andhencelaseroutputpowers,atvariousspatialpoints.Thispermitsthemappingofthelasernearfieldoutputspatialdistributionandthedistributionofthelaserspectrumwithgreatersensitivitythanhasbeenpossiblewithm
