4、ons,athomethenationalgovernmenthasbecomedirectlyandindirectlyactiveinanunprecedentedlybroadarrayofrealms.MattersthatwereoncetheexclusivepurviewofstateandlocalgovernmentsandprivateactorsarenowshapedinWashington.Politicalpartiesandvoluntaryinstitutionshavealsobeenreorganized,andcitizenattachme
5、ntstopoliticshaveshiftedindramaticways.Amidallofthis,partisanandideologicalbalanceshavebeenupended.Inthe1960sandearly1970s,liberalsandDemocratsbrieflyheldsway,promptingfederalactivismonbehalfofcitizenrightsandeconomicregulation.Subsequently,conservativessuccessfullymobilizedpeopleandideastoco
6、unterliberalpracticesandlimit—or,moreoften,refocusandredirect—activistgovernment.Thisbookaimstoprobetheseprofounddomesticpoliticalchangesandtheirconsequences.Bytakingalong-termperspective,wemakevisiblelarge-scaletransformationsthattoooftendisappearinnarrowershort-termstudiesofAmericanpolitic
