2、fart,andsoakeduptheworksofManet,GustaveCourbet,andToulouse-Lautrec,whosesketchystyleimpressedhimgreatly.3BeforehestruckuponCubism,Picassowentthroughaprodigiousnumberofstyles—realism,caricature.TheBluePerioddatesfrom1901to1904andischaracterizedbyapredominantlybluepaletteandsubjectsfocusing
3、onoutcasts,beggars,andprostitutes.Thiswaswhenhealsoproducedhisfirstcreatedpaintinginmemoryofagreatchildhoodfriend,theSpanishpoetCasagemas,whohadcommittedsuicide.Thepaintingstartedasaself-portrait,butPicasso’sfeaturesbecamethoseofhislostfriend.Thecompositionisstilted,thespacecompressed,the
4、gesturesstiff,andthetonespredominantlyblue.Yetanotherexample,perhapsthemostlyricalandmysteriousever,isthehauntingWomanwithaCrow(1903).4TheRosePeriodbeganaround1904whenPicasso’spalettebrightened,thepaintingsdominatedbypinksandbeiges,lightblues,androses.Hissubjectsarecircuspeople,harlequins
5、,andclowns,allofwhomseemtobemuteandstrangelyinactive.OneofthepremierworksofthisperiodisextremelybeautifulFamilyofSaltimbanquesdatingto1905,whichportraysagroupofcircusworkerswhoappearalienatedandincapableofcommunicatingwitheachother,setinaone-dimensionalspace.5In1905,PicassowentbrieflytoHo
6、lland,andonhisreturntoParis,hisworkstookonaclassicalaurawithlargemakeandfemalefiguresseenfrontallyorindistinctprofile,almostlikeearly.6PicassodiscoveredancientIberiansculpturefromSpain,Africanart,andsculptures.Slowly,heincludedthesimplifiedformshefoundinthesesourcesintoastrikingportraitof
