2、owyouhadthewrongideafirst,andsoon.Sothereisntanyplacetopublish,inadignifiedmanner,whatyouactuallydidinordertogettodothework,although,therehasbeeninthesedays,someinterestinthiskindofthing.Sincewinningtheprizeisapersonalthing,IthoughtIcouldbeexcusedinthispa
3、rticularsituation,ifIweretotalkper-sonallyaboutmyrelationshiptoquantumelectrodynamics,ratherthantodiscussthesubjectitselfinarefinedandfinishedfashion.Furthermore,sincetherearethreepeoplewhohavewontheprizeinphysics,iftheyareallgoingtobetalkingaboutquantume
4、lectrodynamicsitself,onemightbecomeboredwiththesubject.So,whatIwouldliketotellyouabouttodayarethesequenceofevents,reallythesequenceofideas,whichoccurred,andbywhichIfinallycameouttheotherendwithanunsolvedproblemforwhichIultimatelyreceivedaprize.Irealizetha
5、tatrulyscientificpaperwouldbeofgreatervalue,butsuchapaperIcouldpublishinregularjournals.So,IshallusethisNobelLectureasanopportunitytodosomethingoflessvalue,butwhichIcannotdoelsewhere.Iaskyourindulgenceinanothermanner.Ishallincludedetailsofanecdoteswhichar
6、eofnovalueeitherscientifically,norforunderstandingthedevelop-mentofideas.Theyareincludedonlytomakethelecturemoreentertaining.Iworkedonthisproblemabouteightyearsuntilthefinalpublicationin1947.ThebeginningofthethingwasattheMassachusettsInstituteofTech-nolog
7、y,whenIwasanundergraduatestudentreadingabouttheknownphys-ics,learningslowlyaboutallthesethingsthatpeoplewereworryingabout,andrealizingultimatelythatthefundamentalproblemofthedaywasthatthequantumtheoryofelectricityandmagnetismwasnotcompletelysatis-factory.
