3、viewsrecentstudiesontheinfluenceoftracemetalexposurehistoryonsubsequentmetaluptakeinmarineinvertebrates,particularlybivalvesandbarnacles.Tracemetalexposuremayinducespecificmetal-bindingligands.Metallothionein-likeproteinsappeartoplayanimportantroleinmediatingmetalupt
4、akeandhenceaccumulation,especiallyforCd.OtherligandssuchassulfideareimportantforAgbiokineticchangesinbivalves.Theincorporationoftracemetalsintometal-richgranulesappearstohavelittleifanyeffectinmodifyingtracemetaluptake.Furthermore,metalsalsointeractstronglyintheirac
5、cumulationbymarineanimals.Generally,dissolvedHguptakeisreducedfollowingexposuretoothermetalssuchasAg,Cd,Cu,andZn.PreexposureofmarinemusselstoZnalsocausesconcomitantchangesintheuptakeofothermetalssuchasCdsharingsimilartransportpathways.Ingeneral,barnaclesarelessresp
6、onsivethanmusselstotracemetalexposure,presumablybecauseofthedominanceofdetoxificatorypathwaysinwhichtheaccumulatedmetalsareboundingranules(relativelybiologicallyinactivepools).Thetissuebodyburdenandthedetoxificatoryfateofmetalsinanimalsseemtobemoreimportantinaffectin
7、gmetalaccumulationthanthenatureoftheexposureroutes(aqueousvs.dietary)oroftheexposureregimes.Tracemetalaccumulationmayalsobevariableindifferentnaturalpopulationsofbivalvesasaresultofdifferentphysicochemicalenvironmentsandhistoriesofexposure.Wefinallysuggestafewareasf
