3、ds,thisarticlearguesthatitisrootedinaparticularideologicalperspective,restsonunexaminedassumptions,andservestoreinforceinequitiesinthebroadersocialorder.EvidencefromresearchandpracticeispresentedwhichsuggeststhattherationaleusedtojustifyEnglishonlyintheclassroomisneithercon
4、clusivenorpedagogicallysound.Further,thearticledetailsagrowingbodyofevidenceindicatingthatL1and/orbilingualoptionsarenotonlyeffectivebutnecessaryforadultESLstudentswithlimitedL1literacyorschoolingandthatuseofstudents'linguisticresourcescanbebeneficialatalllevelsofESL.Accoun
