5、Englishtemptssomepeopletoobserve(quitewrongly)thatthelanguagehas'hardlyanygrammar'.ItwouldbemoreaccuratetosaythatEnglishnolongerhasagrammarlikethatofLatinorGerman,butithascertainlyevolvedagrammarofitsown,asthisbooktestifies.Ininflectedlanguageswedonotdependonthewordordertounderstandwhichnounisthes
6、ubjectofasentenceandwhichistheobject:theendingstellusimmediately.InEnglish,theorderofwordsisessentialtothemeaningofasentence.Wehavetodistinguishcarefullybetweenthesubject-groupandtheverb-group(orpredicate).Thepredicateiswhatissaidaboutthesubject,i.e.itisallthewordsinasentenceexceptthesubject:subje
