2、meaningsfromcontext(Nagy,etal・,1985;Day,1991;Joe,1995;Coady,1997)・Inthepsychologicalliterature,numerousexperimentshavebeenconductedtoverifythefactthatincidentallearningplaysanimportantroleinstudents'secondlanguage(L2)vocabularyacquisition.Forexample,Nagy,Herman,andAnderson(1
3、985)concludefromtheirownexperimentalstudythatchildrenindeeddolearnlargenumbersofwordsbymeansofincidentallearningfromwrittencontexI.DupuyandKrashen(1992)alsofoundintheresearchthatthelearnerswhoparticipatedinreadingandwatchingafilminclassacquiredapproximated5to10wordsperhourth
4、roughincidentallearningfromatext・However,therearestillmanyunsettledquestionsaboutIVA.SomescholarspointoutthatIVAisverycomplexandtherearemanyfactorsthatmayaffecttheoutcome・Alargenumberofstudieshavebeenconductedtoaddressthesefactors,whichincluderichnessofcontextclues,learningt
5、ask,exposurefrequencyofnewwords,learnerfactors,includinglearners,cognitivestyle,vocabularysize,culturalbackground,motivation,etc.Manyempiricalstudiesexploredtheeffectofthesefactorsonincidentalvocabularyacquisition.Forexample,LauferandHulstijn(2001)examinedtheinfluenceofdiffe
6、rentreadingtaskonacquisition.Knight(1984)investigatedtheinfluenceofdictionaryuseonstudents'vocabularyinferenceandretention.MondriaandBoer(1991)analyzedthepositiveroleofcontextualcluesinincidentalvocabularyacquisition.However,thefactoroflearners,cognitivestyleislargelyneglect
7、ed・Manypsychologistandeducatorsbelievedthatpeople'ssuccessesandfailuresinlearningasecondlanguagehavemuchtodowithindividualdifferencesinabi1ity.Inthepastfewdecades,investigatorsmadeextensiveresearchesontherolesofindividualdifferencessuchasintelligence,cognitivestyle,andperson
