2、dCentralPacificRailroadswerelinkedbyagoldenspikedrivenintothefinaltieofthenation’sfirsttranscontinentalrailnetwork.Dynamic,transformative,and“unpent,”modernism’snewsocial,cultural,andtechnologicaleconomiesofscalewouldrapidlyremapspace,time,anddistanceinwaysthatwereheretoforeunimaginable.Suchaccel
3、-eratingvelocitiesofchangewouldincreasinglydefinethequickened“pulseofthecontinent.”Soon,Americanmodernismwouldexceedtheparochiallimitsofnationformationintheglobalreachofitsimaginedcommunity.Suchwasthepaceofmodernizationthatby1880thesteamlocomotivewouldbeeclipsedbyThomasEdison’sdemonstrationofth
