2、umandspatialpowerdistributionoftheoutputofaquasi-cwcarbonmonoxidegaslase匚Thedetectorrecordingmediumiscomposedofthinmylaroatedwithtemperaturesensitive,encapsulated,cholesteric,liquidcrystalsandenergyabsorbingblackpaint.Auniformspatialcolordistributionoftheliquidcrystalsisesta

3、blishedandmaintainedbyimmersioninacontrolledtemperatureliquidbath.Theresultinguniformcolordistributionismodified,atvariousspatialpoints,bytheadditionoflaserenergyobtainedeitherindirectlyfromthelaseroutputcouplertoyieldthespatialdependenceofthenearorfarfieldlaseroutputorfroma

4、spectrometeroutputtoyieldthespectrumofthelaseroutput.Theadditionoflessthan15mJ/cm2ofincidentenergyisadequatetomodifythecolordistribution.Theuniformityandprecisecontroloftheliquidcrystaltemperatureandhencecolor,bytheuseofaliquidbath,makesitpossibletocomparecolors,andhencelase

5、routputpowers,atvariousspatialpoints.Thispermitsthemappingofthelasernearfieldoutputspatialdistributionandthedistributionofthelaserspectrumwithgreatersensitivitythanhasbeenpossiblewithmoreconventionaltechniques.Resultsshowingthenearfieldenergydistributionandoutputspectrumofas
