5、fwell-provenrobustnesstosupplydynamicreactivepowerwithfastresponsetimeandwithlowmaintenance.Withtheadventofhighpowergateturn-offthyristorsandtransistordevices(GTO,IGBT,…)anewgenerationofpowerelectronicequipment,STATCOM,showsgreatpromiseforapplicationinp
6、owersystems[3,4].ThispaperaimstoexplainthebenefitsofSVCsandSTATCOMsforapplicationinutilitypowersystems.InstallationofalargenumberofSVCsandexperiencegainedfromrecentSTATCOMprojectsthroughouttheworldmotivatesustoclarifycertainaspectsofthesedevices.II.BASI
7、CDESCRIPTIONThissectionexplainsbrieflythebasicconfigurationofSVCsandSTATCOMs:A.SVCThecompensatornormallyincludesathyristor-controlledreactor(TCR),thyristor-switchedcapacitors(TSCs)andharmonicfilters.Itmightalsoincludemechanicallyswitchedshuntcapacitors(
