5、ckpresentsandpayingcallsofpretendedceremonyonthe1stofApril.FrenchandDutchreferencesfrom1508and1539respectivelydescribeAprilFools'DayjokesandthecustomofmakingthemonthefirstofApril.Thoughthe1stofAprilappearstohavebeenancientlyobservedinGreatBritainasageneralfestival,itwasapparentlynotuntil
6、thebeginningofthe18thcenturythatthemakingofApril-foolswasacommoncustom.InScotlandthecustomwasknownas"huntingthegowk,"i.e.thecuckoo,andApril-foolswere"April-gowks,"thecuckoobeingthere,asitisinmostlands,atermofcontempt.InFrancethepersonfooledisknownaspoissond'avril.Thishasbeenexplainedfrom
