2、ll Oslo,Norway1:44P.M.CETTHEPRESIDENT: YourMajesties,YourRoyalHighnesses,distinguishedmembersoftheNorwegianNobelCommittee,citizensofAmerica,andcitizensoftheworld:Ireceivethishonorwithdeepgratitudeandgreathumility. Itisanawardthatspeakstoourhighestaspirations--thatforallthecrueltyandhardshipofourwo

3、rld,wearenotmereprisonersoffate. Ouractionsmatter,andcanbendhistoryinthedirectionofjustice.AndyetIwouldberemissifIdidnotacknowledgetheconsiderablecontroversythatyourgenerousdecisionhasgenerated. (Laughter.) Inpart,thisisbecauseIamatthebeginning,andnottheend,ofmylaborsontheworldstage. Comparedtosom

4、eofthegiantsofhistorywho'vereceivedthisprize--SchweitzerandKing;MarshallandMandela--myaccomplishmentsareslight. Andthentherearethemenandwomenaroundtheworldwhohavebeenjailedandbeateninthepursuitofjustice;thosewhotoilinhumanitarianorganizationstorelievesuffering;theunrecognizedmillionswhosequietacts

5、ofcourageandcompassioninspireeventhemosthardenedcynics. Icannotarguewiththosewhofindthesemenandwomen--someknown,someobscuretoallbutthosetheyhelp--tobefarmoredeservingofthishonorthanI.ButperhapsthemostprofoundissuesurroundingmyreceiptofthisprizeisthefactthatIamtheCommander-in-Chiefofthemilitaryofan

6、ationinthemidstoftwowars. Oneofthesewarsiswindingdown. TheotherisaconflictthatAmericadidnotseek;oneinwhichwearejoinedby42othercountries--includingNorway--inanefforttodefendourselvesandallnationsfromfurtherattacks.Still,weareatwar,andI'mresponsibleforthedeploymentofthousandsofyoungAmericanstobattle

7、inadistantland. Somewillkill,andsomewillbekilled. AndsoIcomeherewithanacutesenseofthecostsofarmedconflict--filledwithdifficultquestionsabouttherelationshipbetweenwarandpeace,andourefforttoreplaceonewiththeother.N
