1、DrivenbytheoverseasChineseinvestmentfromHongKongandTaiwan,thePearlRiverDelta(PRD)hasevolvedintotheworld’sfactoryembeddingintotheglobalproductionnetwork(Chen2007;Enrightetal.2005).TherelocationofHongKongfirmsinthe1980sand1990salsocontributedtotheformationofindustrialdistrictsinthePRD,c

2、onceptualizedasthePRDmodel(Eng1997;SitandYang1997).Theearlyconcernsabouttherelocationinthelate1980sandtheearly1990scanbetracedbacktotheliteratureonthecrossborderdevelopmentintheregionofthePRDandHongKong.Forinstance,Chan(1998)reviewedtheregionaldevelopmentofSouthChinaandidentifiedthela

3、ckoftheoreticaldiscourseonthecross-borderdevelopment.WhiletherecentlocationofHongKongmanufacturingfirmshavebeendiscussedinthemassmediaandattractedconsiderableattentionfromthepolicymakers,fewempiricalstudieshavetimelyandcomprehensivelyexaminethedrivingforces,origins,destinationsaswella

4、stheeffectsofthisroundofrelocationinrelationtotherestructuringofthePRDmodel.RecentyearshavewitnesseddramaticchangesofthelocalbusinessenvironmentinthePRDincludinglaborshortage,stricterenvironmentalregulationandthesocalledrelocationpoliciesdesignedbyGuangdonggovernment.Againstthisbackdr

5、op,HongKongmanufacturingfirmshavetoadoptnewspatialandtransformationstrategies(Yang2006,2007),givingrisetotheemergingindustrialrelocationofHongKongmanufacturingfirmsandthespatialrestructuringofindustrialdistrictsinthePRD.Thispaperthusaimstoinvestigatewhatarethedrivingforcesunderlyingth

6、enewroundofrelocation?HowHongKongfirmsadopteddifferentrelocationstrategiescomparedwiththe1980sand1990strajectories?Economicgeographershaveincreasinglyrealizedthattheliteratureontherestructuringofindustrialdistrictshaspaidlittleattentiontotherelocationoffirmsanddelocalizedgroups(Weieta
