2、lyAnimmune-adherencehemagglutination(IAHA)methodforcoronavirus229Eantibodydeterminationhasbeendevelopedbothfordiagnosisofrecentinfectionsandfordetectionoflong-pastinfections.Resultshavebeencom-paredwiththoseobtainedbycomplementfixation(CF),neutralizati

3、on(Nt),andindirecthemagglutination(IHA)tests.TheIAHAmethodhasbeenshowntobeassensitiveastheCF,Nt,andIHAtestsindetectingcasesofacute229Einfection.However,inaseroepidemiologicalsurveyof343healthypeopleofallages,IAIIAdetected229Eantibodyin254individuals(74

4、.0%),Ntin166(48.3%),IHAin89(25.Y%),andCFin30(8.7%).Astudyoftheprevalenceofcoronavirus229EIAHAantibodyinthedifferentagegroupshasshownthatduringtheseconddecadeoflifenearly100%ofthepopulationacquirethistypeofantibody,whereasonly50%arepositiveattheendofthe

5、firstdecade.Intheolderagegroups,thehighfrequencyofCFantibody(“marker”ofrecentinfection)indirectlyconfirmsthehighrateof229EreinfectionsandthenonprotectivenatureofIAHAantibody.CFtiter21:8in90%ofcasescorrespondedtoIAIIAtiters21:64.However,serawithIAHAtite

6、rsof21:128wereoftenCF-negative.Recent2298in-fections(orreinfections),asdeterminedbythepresenceofCFantibody,weremorefrequentinApril-MaythaninOctober-November.Threecasesofacuteinfectionshowing229Eseroconversion(twoadultsandonechild)wereobservedduringthew
