3、ve,thementalstateofpeoplewhoarecontinuouslyworriedaboutlosingtheirjob“justcontinuestogetworseandworse,”Burchellsays.Evolutionarypsychologistssupportthistheorybyarguingthathumanbeingsfeelmorestressduringtimesofinsecuritybecausetheysenseanimmediatebutinvisiblethreat.Patientshavebeenknowntoexperience
4、higherlevelsofanxiety,forexample,whilewaitingforexaminationresultsthanknowingwhattheyaresufferingfrom—eveniftheresultiscancer.It’sbettertogetthebadnewsandstartdoingsomethingaboutitratherthanwaitwithanxiety.Whentheuncertaintycontinues,peoplestayinanonstop“fightorflight”response,whichleadstodamaging
5、stress.Butnoteveryemployeeininsecureindustrieshassuchadiscouragingview,Burchellsays.Ingeneral,womengetonbetter.Whilereportinghigherlevelsofanxietythanmenwhendirectlyquestioned,womenscoredlowerinstressontheGHQ12,evenwhentheyhadajobtheyfeltinsecureaboutlosing.AsBurchellexplains,“Forwomen,moststudies
