3、laryofaround54,000wordfamilies.Thisisalearninggoalfarbeyondthereachesofsecondlanguagelearnersand,asweshallsee,mostnativespeakers.•Atpresentthebestconservativeruleofthumbthatwehaveisthatuptoavocabularysizeofaround20,000wordfamilies,weshouldexpectthatnativespeak
4、erswilladdroughly1000wordfamiliesayeartotheirvocabularysize.Thatmeansthatafiveyearoldbeginningschoolwillhaveavocabularyofaround4000to5000wordfamilies.Auniversitygraduatewillhaveavocabularyofaround20,000wordfamilies(Goulden,NationandRead,1990).Thesefiguresareve
5、ryroughandthereislikelytobeverylargevariationbetweenindividuals.Thesefiguresexcludepropernames,compoundwords,abbreviations,andforeignwords.Awordfamilyistakentoincludeabaseword,itsinflectedforms,andasmallnumberofreasonablyregularderivedforms(BauerandNation,1993
6、).•Clearlythelearnerneedstoknowthe3,000orsohighfrequencywordsofthelanguage.Theseareanimmediatehighpriorityandthereislittlesenseinfocusingonothervocabularyuntilthesearewelllearned.•Nation(1990)arguesthatafterthesehighfrequencywordsarelearned,thenextfocusforthet
