2、sonheldthefirstclassesinanewschoolhouseadjoiningTrinityChurch,locatedonwhatisnowlowerBroadwayinManhattan.Therewereeightstudentsintheclass.AtKing'sCollege,thefutureleadersofcolonialsocietycouldreceiveaneducationdesignedto"enlargetheMind,improvetheUnderstanding,p
3、olishthewholeMan,andqualifythemtosupportthebrightestCharactersinalltheelevatedstationsinlife."Oneearlymanifestationoftheinstitution'sloftygoalswastheestablishmentin1767ofthefirstAmericanmedicalschooltogranttheM.D.degree.In1857,theCollegemovedfromParkPlace,neart
4、hepresentsiteofcityhall,toForty-ninthStreetandMadisonAvenue,whereitremainedforthenextfortyyears.Duringthelasthalfofthenineteenthcentury,Columbiarapidlyassumedtheshapeofamodernuniversity.TheColumbiaSchoolofLawwasfoundedin1858.Thecountry'sfirstminingschool,aprecu
5、rsoroftoday'sFuFoundationSchoolofEngineeringandAppliedScience,wasestablishedin1864andawardedthefirstColumbiaPh.D.in1875.Thecollegereopenedin1784withanewname—Columbia—thatembodiedthepatrioticfervorthathadinspiredthenation'squestforindependence.Therevitalizedinst
6、itutionwasrecognizableasthedescendantofitscolonialancestor,thankstoitsinclinationtowardAnglicanismandtheneedsofanurbanpopulation,buttherewereimportantdifferences:ColumbiaCollegereflectedthelegacyoftheRevolutioninthegreatereconomic,denominational,andgeographicdi
7、versityofitsnewstudentsandleaders.Cloisteredcampuslifegavewaytothemorecommonphenomenonofdaystudentswholivedathomeorlodgedinthecity.TheColumbiaUniversityCampusIn1897,theuniversitymovedfromForty-ninthStreetandMadisonAvenue,whereithadstoodforfortyyears,toitspresen
