3、entlystartedtogrowveryquickly.Rapidgrowthisexpectedtocontinueduetoavarietyofcauses.Theseinclude(a)improvedproductreliabilityandperformance,(b)decreasedcostsformanufacturingasnewprocessesandeconomies-of-scalebecomesignificant,(c)increasedpublicawarenessofsolarpower’sadvantages,and(d)governmen
4、tsubsidies(includingtaxcreditsandfeed-intariffs).TheDepartmentofEnergy’s(DOE)SolarAmericaInitiative(SAI)hasambitiouscostgoalsforsolarpowerwhichwillrequirehigh-performancelow-costglassproducts.Mostsolarpowersystemsuseglassproducts.Theproductshavespecialrequirements,includinghightransmissivity
5、forPV;highreflectivity,coatingdelaminationresistanceandspecialgeometricalshapes(bentglass)forCSPsystems;andlowsoilingforbothPVandCSP.Inaddition,PVglassforthin-filmmodulesoftenrequiresoneormoretransparentconductivecoatingstofacilitatecurrentcollection.Borosilicateglassisrequiredforsomethin-fi
6、lmPVtechnologiesbecauseofitshigherworkingtemperature(comparedtothemoreconventional,andlessexpensive,soda-limeglass).Glasscanbeformulatedandfabricatedtoprovidethesefunctions.WhetherthatisdoneintheUnitedStatesonacommercially-viablebasistomeetfuturedomesticdemandforsolarenergyisakeyquestion.Thi
