4、ristorcontrolledreactor(TCR)andthethyristorswitchedcapacitor(TSC)havegainedasignificantmarket,primarilybecauseofwell-provenrobustnesstosupplydynamicreactivepowerwithfastresponsetimeandwithlowmaintenance.Withtheadventofhighpowergateturn-offthyristorsandtransistordevices(GTO,I
5、GBT,…)anewgenerationofpowerelectronicequipment,STATCOM,showsgreatpromiseforapplicationinpowersystems[3,4].ThispaperaimstoexplainthebenefitsofSVCsandSTATCOMsforapplicationinutilitypowersystems.InstallationofalargenumberofSVCsandexperiencegainedfromrecentSTATCOMprojectsthrough
6、outtheworldmotivatesustoclarifycertainaspectsofthesedevices.II.BASICDESCRIPTIONThissectionexplainsbrieflythebasicconfigurationofSVCsandSTATCOMs:A.SVCThecompensatornormallyincludesathyristor-controlledreactor(TCR),thyristor-switchedcapacitors(TSCs)andharmonicfilters.Itmightal
