3、toenteruponawarorarepreparingthemselvesforanykindofstrugglemayderivesomebenefitfromanarrativeofasimilarsituationinhistory,inasmuchasthisdisclosesthefinalresultattainedbymenofanearlierdayinastruggleofthesamesort,andforeshadows,atleastforthosewhoaremostprudentinplanning,whatoutcom
4、epresenteventswillprobablyhave.Furthermorehehadassurancethathewasespeciallycompetenttowritethehistoryoftheseevents,iffornootherreason,becauseitfelltohislot,whenappointedadvisertothegeneralBelisarius,tobeaneye-witnessofpracticallyalltheeventstobedescribed.Itwashisconvictionthatwh
5、ileclevernessisappropriatetorhetoric,andinventivenesstopoetry,truthaloneisappropriatetohistory.Inaccordancewiththisprinciplehehasnotconcealedthefailuresofevenhismostintimateacquaintances,buthaswrittendownwithcompleteaccuracyeverythingwhichbefellthoseconcerned,whetherithappenedto
6、bedonewellorillbythem.Itwillbeevidentthatnomoreimportantormightierdeedsaretobefoundinhistorythanthosewhichhavebeenenactedinthesewars,—providedonewishestobasehisjudgmentonthetruth.Forinthemmoreremarkablefeatshavebeenperformedthaninanyotherwarswithwhichweareacquainted;unless,indee
